Indien ist Indien. Könnte man meinen. Nach außen wirkt das manchmal so. Aber tatsächlich ist Indien, Inder, Indisch eine Form von Sammelbegriff, der unterschiedliche Länder, Sprachen, Religionen und Völker umfasst.
Es gibt gewaltige Unterschiede, was den Menschen hier sehr bewusst ist. Leute hier meinen, dass es schon so etwas wie eine indische Grundgemeinsamkeit gibt. Aber viel offensichtlicher sind Unterschiede.
Der gemeinsame Nenner scheint durch die britische Herrschaft entstanden zu sein.
Diese gemeinsame Basis ist womöglich genau das, was uns in Europa fehlt, um wirklich Europäer zu sein. Ein gemeinsamer Nenner, den man nicht gut finden muss, der aber eine Verständigung ermöglicht.

India. You have an immediate idea what it refers to. You have people in mind, language, religion. But it is not so easy. The Repulic of India is a mix of different peoples, cultures, languages and religions. Still there is some underlying idea. Some common thingy, that ties people together as 'indians'.
Unity in diversity really brings that down to a point. India is not free of segregation and discrimination. Differences are good , because they provide identification, but also bad, because they allow for strange and maybe unfair judgement.
I feel that this common idea is missing in Europe. We don't percieve ourselves as European, while being German. We don't submit to this idea of huge diversity, united by another level of identity. And come to think of the origin of India's unity, the British Rule, it might be good that it takes time for Europe to grow together.
