Dieser Damm ist mitunter verwickelt in eine ziemlich wilde Geschichte. Im Süden Indiens ist Wasser ein knappes Gut. Dank einiger Großprojekte gibt es eine mäßige bis gute Wasserversorgung der Bevölkerung. Ein Damm vor der Stadt ist ein Segen. Aber es entzünden sich auch Konflikte daran. In Karnataka gab es unter anderem furchtbare Auseinandersetzung mit Tamilen aus dem Nachbarstaat, weil dorthin Wasser des Dammspeichers geliefert werden muss. Der durchaus nicht nur des Wassers wegen aufgestaute Frust über die Nachbarn entlud sich Anfang der 1990er Jahre in Gewaltakten.
